With father Dougie alongside as his emergency caddie, Robert MacIntyre claimed victory at the RBC Canadian Open, edging Ben Griffin by one stroke.

The 27-year-old Scot entered Sunday’s finale at Hamilton Golf and Country Club holding a commanding four-stroke lead and after a birdie on the 11th hole, MacIntyre’s advantage remained four. But back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 by the leader, followed by three straight birdies by Griffin (Nos. 15, 16 and 17), had the playing partners standing on the 18th tee separated by just a shot.

On the par-4 final hole, however, the left-handed Scot hit a perfect approach, then two-putted for par from 12 feet to post 68 and claim his maiden PGA Tour title.

“Goose bumps. It’s incredible,” said an emotional MacIntyre, who finished 16-under 264. “It’s a dream of mine to play golf for a living. It’s been a dream of mine to win on the PGA Tour.”

The victory was even sweeter for MacIntyre with his father on the bag.

“This week, when I phoned him to come and caddie for me, to be honest, I was just coming here to play a golf tournament,” MacIntyre said. “There was no expectation, there was a lot going on with visas and stuff during the week and to win it with him on the bag is just — to be honest, I still can’t believe that it happened.”

With a 5-under 65, Griffin finished solo second on 15 under.

“I fought hard,” said Griffin. “It felt like there was a lid on the cup for most of the day for me. I hit so many pretty good putts, I wouldn’t say like striped putts, but pretty good putts and just kept burning edges. A couple bad putts but stayed patient.”

France’s Victor Perez (64) was alone in third on 14 under.

Two-time Canadian Open champion Rory McIlroy also shot 64 to finish T4 alongside Tom Kim (64) at 13 under.

“Three really good rounds of golf, one not so good one,” said McIlroy. “Felt a little out of sorts on Friday. Did a good range session and sort of rectified it.”

Corey Conners (65) was the top Canadian, finishing on 12 under.

“Definitely something to be proud of,” Conners said. “Yeah, obviously disappointing to not win the big trophy, but, yeah, it’s a cool honor.”

Another Canadian, Mackenzie Hughes, entered Sunday tied for second and part of the lead chasing pack, but posted an even-par 70 to finish T7.

“Pretty gutted,” said Hughes said. “I wanted this one pretty badly. This one will sting for a while.”
