After finishing in fourth place at the DP World Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy won his fourth career Harry Vardon trophy. The little-known award goes to the European golf tour’s points winner.

Afterwards the pint-sized Northern Irishman said he’s shooting for Colin Montgomerie‘s record of eight European number one spots.

“I know Monty won eight of these things,” McIlroy told BBC Sport.

“Hopefully I can keep on the journey and try and get close to him.”

The controversial 33-year-old, who has not won a major since the 2014 PGA at Valhalla, joined Swedish superstar Henrik Stenson (2013) as the only golfers in history to win the points races on both the American (Fedex Cup) and European (Race to Dubai) tours in the same season.
