The PGA of America confirmed Wednesday that Tiger Woods will not captain the United States team at the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor Golf Club in Ireland, following the golf legend’s recent arrest on DUI charges and his decision to step away from golf to focus on his health.

Woods, a 15-time major champion and one of the most iconic figures in the sport, had been widely viewed as a leading candidate to succeed Keegan Bradley, who captained the U.S. team at the 2025 matches. However, the announcement came just days after Woods was involved in a rollover car crash on Jupiter Island, Florida, on March 27, leading to his arrest on misdemeanor charges including DUI with property damage.

Bodycam footage released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office showed Woods undergoing sobriety tests, with authorities noting he was sweating profusely, limping, and had pills in his possession. Woods reportedly told deputies he had been looking at his phone while changing radio stations before the collision. He blew 0.000 on a Breathalyzer but refused a urine test and has pleaded not guilty. A judge has granted him permission to seek inpatient treatment outside the United States for privacy reasons.

On Tuesday, Woods issued a statement announcing he would step away indefinitely: “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

The PGA of America responded with a supportive statement on Wednesday: “The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being. We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision. Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as Captain of the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup Captaincy when appropriate.”

This marks another setback in what has been a challenging period for Woods, who has battled multiple back and leg injuries in recent years, limiting his competitive play. He has previously expressed interest in Ryder Cup involvement but declined the captaincy role for the 2025 matches due to scheduling and recovery demands.

The 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland will pit the U.S. team against Europe, led once again by captain Luke Donald. With Woods out of consideration, speculation has already turned to potential successors, including Bradley and Jim Furyk, who has emerged as an early favorite according to some betting markets. Other names frequently mentioned in golf circles include past captains and prominent U.S. players with strong leadership credentials.

The PGA of America emphasized that the focus remains on supporting Woods during this time while ensuring a strong leadership transition for Team USA.
