The PGA Tour on Tuesday rallied behind Tiger Woods, issuing a statement of unwavering support as the 15-time major champion announced he is stepping away from competition “for a period of time” to seek treatment and focus on his health following his arrest on suspicion of DUI last week.

In a statement posted to social media Tuesday evening, Woods, 50, addressed the seriousness of the situation for the first time since his arrest.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” he wrote. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery. I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

The PGA Tour responded promptly with its own statement, placing Woods’ well-being front and center.

“Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course,” the Tour said. “But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp added a personal note of support.

“Tiger Woods is one of the most influential figures the sports world has ever known,” Rolapp said. “Over the last year, I have come to deeply appreciate Tiger not only for his impact on the game, but for his friendship and the perspective he has shared with me as I joined the golf industry. My thoughts are with him and his family as he takes this step, for which he has my full respect and support.”

Woods was arrested March 27 in Jupiter Island, Florida, after his black Range Rover rolled over following a crash in which he clipped a truck pulling a trailer.

According to authorities, he exhibited signs of impairment, had two hydrocodone pills in his pocket, registered zero on a breathalyzer but refused a urine test. He was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Woods pleaded not guilty earlier Tuesday.

The announcement comes just days before the 2026 Masters Tournament at Augusta National, where Woods — a five-time winner — had been expected to compete. He will miss the event as he prioritizes recovery. Woods also serves as chairman of the PGA Tour’s Future Competition Committee; a tour spokesman said his committee work will continue in his absence.

Woods has faced significant health and injury challenges in recent years, including a serious leg injury from a 2021 single-car crash and a 2017 DUI arrest related to prescription medication that led to a stay in treatment.

The golf world now watches to see how long Woods’ hiatus will last as he focuses on his recovery. The PGA Tour’s message was clear: its priority is not Woods’ return to the course, but his well-being.
