A look at the numbers of the top-five leaders after round one of the U.S. Open, where many of the game’s biggest names struggled mightily on day one at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Along with their top-line statistics and performance on the different sets of holes, we track their performance through the famous middle stretch at Shinnecock Hills (Nos. 7-12).

Raymond Floyd, the winner of the 1986 U.S. Open at Shinnecock, believes these six holes need to be played to even-par. Of the top-five players, only Jason Dufner finished over-par.

“The toughest stretch at Shinnecock is the middle six holes, 7 through 12,” Raymond Floyd told the NY Times in advance of the 2004 Open. “To win, I think you have to play those middle six holes in even par over four rounds. The prevailing left-to-right wind affects you on 7, 8, 9 and 10, then 11 and 12 are by no means easy.”

“I feel like I got good control of the speed. I feel like I’ve got good feel on the greens right now. I putted well for the first two days. My speed’s been really good. Even when I’ve had long putts, I’ve got it up there pretty close to the hole. And, you know, you get difficult putts out here with a lot of break on them, and I feel like I’m seeing the lines pretty well right now,” -Dustin Johnson

QUOTABLE
“I definitely think, for me, I like the way the golf course sets up in the wind. I’ve played enough golf through the years now to know my game suits kind of windy, tough conditions. Looking at the forecast last night, we knew it was going to be a stiff wind. I didn’t quite think it was going to be up to kind of 25 mile an hour wind,” – Ian Poulter

“The putter kind of felt like it’s coming around. Warmed up, had a pretty good warmup this morning with some of those thoughts I kind of found last night. I kind of worked my way into the round, hit a couple of shots that were really good that kind of gave me some confidence to kind of build on that,” – Scott Piercy

QUOTABLE
“I think with this setup and this golf course, you shoot 70 every day, you’re going to be in the mix. So we’ll see how the conditions go, how the golf course responds to the weather, and where the USGA wants the golf course to be for the week. I think the last six or seven holes, probably right about where it needs to be for the rest of the week. I think that would be very fair but challenging test for the rest of the week,” – Jason Dufner
