The PGA of America announced Wednesday a major overhaul of how American players will qualify for the 2027 Ryder Cup, eliminating points from the previous season and decoupling the standings from prize money.

Under the new system, points will be awarded exclusively during the 2027 PGA Tour season across 31 designated events.

Qualifying begins at The American Express (Jan. 18-24) and concludes at the BMW Championship (Aug. 16-22). No points will be given for 2026 results, including the previous year’s majors and The Players Championship, a departure from recent U.S. practice.

The top six eligible players on the U.S. Ryder Cup points list after the BMW Championship will earn automatic spots on captain Jim Furyk’s 12-man team. Furyk will announce his six captain’s picks during the week of Aug. 30, after the Tour Championship. The Ryder Cup itself is scheduled for Sept. 17-19 at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Points are now assigned on a fixed sliding scale by finishing position and event category rather than dollars earned.

Tournament winners receive:

• 3,000 points for a major championship wins.
• 2,850 for The Players Championship victgory.
• 2,250 for PGA Tour Signature event winners as well as the first two FedEx Cup playoff events (FedEx St. Jude Championship and BMW Championship).
• 1,500 for winners of designated full-field PGA Tour events.
• Players who make the cut earn a percentage of an event’s total points based on their finish position.
• Opposite-field events award no points.
• At the Zurich Classic team event, both partners must be U.S.-eligible for any points to be credited.

Furyk and the PGA of America cited the growing disparity in purse sizes between high-profile Signature events and regular Tour stops as a key reason for the change.

“The landscape has changed so much in the last five years,” Furyk said earlier this year. “We need to come up with a fair assessment of how to identify those six players.”

In a statement accompanying Wednesday’s announcement, he added that the new process “will help us identify the strongest players in September 2027.”

The 6-and-6 split of automatic qualifiers and captain’s picks remains unchanged.

The 2027 Ryder Cup matches will be contested Sept. 17-19, 2027, at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Europe has won the last two Ryder Cups; the United States has not won on European soil since 1993.

Luke Donald will captain Europe in a bid to become the first skipper to win three consecutive matches.
