Viktor Hovland rolled in a birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and claim the 2026 Travelers Championship title.
Hovland and Scheffler both made par on the 18th hole in regulation to finish regulation play tied at 21-under 259, forcing a sudden-death Monday playoff after weather delays pushed the final round into extra time. In the Monday morning (9 a.m. est) playoff on the par-4 18th, Hovland hit his approach close and sank an 8-footer for birdie. Scheffler’s birdie attempt from shorter distance slid by on the left, handing Hovland his eighth PGA Tour victory.
Hovland, who entered the final round with a one-shot lead over Scheffler, carded a final-round 69. The Norwegian showed resilience throughout a dramatic closing stretch marked by big putts and momentum shifts. Scheffler posted a 68 in regulation, including several clutch par-saving putts, but could not convert in the extra session.
“It’s been stressful, but it feels amazing,” Hovland told NBC afterward. “Scottie brings out the best in me, and to come out on top in a playoff like this is huge.”
The win earned Hovland $3.6 million from the $20 million purse. He is expected to move to No.12 (from 30) in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Scheffler’s fourth runner-up finish of the season underscored his consistency as the world’s top player, though he fell just short in the decisive moments.
Other notable finishers included Collin Morikawa, who shot a low-round 61 to finish solo third on 20 under.
