PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Cameron Young finally broke through at one of golf’s most prestigious venues, capturing the 2026 Players Championship with a dramatic one-stroke victory over Matt Fitzpatrick on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass.

Young, the long-hitting American who had been knocking on the door of major contention for years, carded a final-round 4-under 68 to finish on 13-under 275. That edged out Fitzpatrick’s matching 68, which left the Englishman at 12-under 276 in a tense finale that came down to the iconic 18th hole.

“I feel like we just kept ourselves in a really good spot all day today, really all week,” said Young in a post-round interview with NBC. “The nerves kicked in over the 8-inch putt on the last. That hole looked really, really small there from pretty close range. So happy to have finished it off, and just really excited to have played the way I did.”

The victory marks Young’s second PGA Tour win, and second in his last 10 starts, earning the New York native the $4.5 million winner’s share from the $25 million purse — the largest regular-season prize in golf. It also vaults the 29-year-old into elite company as the champion of the PGA Tour’s flagship event, which is more and more looking like golf’s “fifth major.”

Starting the day four shots back of 54-hole leader Ludvig Aberg (76), Young got off to a slow start but surged with birdies on Nos. 7, 10 and 13 to set up a two-hole showdown with playing partner Fitzpatrick.

Young tied Fitzpatrick with a birdie on the iconic 17th hole, then edged him with a tap-in par on the 18th, where Fitzpatrick’s tee shot into the pine straw resulted in a bogey 5. Young finished the two iconic closing holes birdie-par to Fitzpatrick’s par-bogey, culminating in a two-shot swing and a victory for the American.

Young’s rounds of 68-67-72-68 showcased his ball-striking prowess on the demanding layout, where he navigated the tricky Pete Dye design with composure. Highlights included a near-ace on the par-3 17th in the third round and a 137-yard approach to nine feet for birdie late Sunday.

For Fitzpatrick, the runner-up finish was a strong showing but a heartbreaking near-miss. The 2022 U.S. Open champion fought valiantly, posting consistent rounds of 70-69-69-68, but the tee shot on 18 will haunt the Northwestern alum for some time.

Xander Schauffele (69) finished third at 11-under, while others like Robert MacIntyre (69) contended but faded late.

Aberg, the leader to begin the day, was cruising along at even par through 10 holes, but never recovered after a two-hole meltdown on 11 (bogey) and 12 (double bogey). The Swede added another bogey on 15 to sign for a 76, and a T5 finish on 9 under.

“It got away from me quick there,” said Aberg said. “Yeah, it was just poor swings. I felt like I’ve had that sort of 7-wood right miss a few times this week, on No. 4 especially twice, and it came up on 11 as well. Then tried to press a little bit on 12, hitting driver, where sometimes you can play 3-wood a little short of that bunker.”

Young’s win ends a wait for his breakthrough signature victory and sets him up perfectly for the upcoming Masters. In his post-round interview, he reflected on the moment: “This place is special, and to win here means everything.”

The Players Championship once again delivered edge-of-the-seat excitement, with Young’s late charge and Fitzpatrick’s final-hole miss providing an unforgettable conclusion to the 2026 edition.
