On Sunday at The Country Club of Virginia, Bernhard Langer birdied the 18th hole to force overtime with Doug Barron, and then made birdie again on the same par-5 hole to claim victory at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

The win was Langer’s first of the 2021 season and 42nd of his record-setting Champions Tour career. With one event remaining before the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, the 64-year-old German now holds down the No. 1 spot in the Schwab race.

The victory moved Langer to within three of Hale Irwin‘s record 45 senior circuit wins.

“I’ve been knocking on the door and I’ve lost a bunch of playoffs and I’ve tried to forget that, block it out of my mind because I’ve had a number of close calls, but all day I had a lot of peace,” said Langer, who becomes the oldest (64) player to ever win on the Champions Tour.

“Larry Moody, our chaplain, sent me a Bible verse that said, ‘you can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you.’

“So I felt strengthened and felt like this may be the time, but you just never know.

“Doug played a great tournament. It comes down to the putt, that’s how tight it is out here, but it’s an awesome feeling.

“I haven’t won since Tucson last year. It’s been a while – but that’s how much sweeter it is.”
