The PGA Tour travels across the pond for the Genesis Scottish Open — the long-running championship leading into the 153rd British Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

The 44th edition of Scotland’s second biggest golf tournament will be contested for the fourth time as an official PGA Tour event. For the seventh year in a row, The Renaissance Club will be the host venue. The newer track on Scotland’s Gold Coast will play to a par 70 and stretch to 7,282 yards for the country’s national championship.

Robert MacIntyre will defend his title against a stacked field, including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele, among others.

Scottish Open History

The Scottish Open debuted in 1935 at Gleneagles with Englishman Percy Alliss edging compatriot Jack Busson by four strokes to win a prize of £750. The 1936 edition was sponsored by Penfold, and titled the Penfold Scottish Open. The tournament was contested at Ayr Belleisle Golf Club with Jimmy Adams beating Tom Collinge in a 36-hole playoff.

The third installment of the Scottish Open was planned for late June, 1937 at Carnoustie in advance of the 72nd Open Championship. A last-minute objection by the R&A, though, forced tournament organizers to cancel the event.

The Scottish Open returned some 36 years later in 1972 as part of the inaugural season of the European Tour, with Sunbeam Electric assuming the title sponsor role. The tournament, ironically, was contested the week prior to the Open Championship. It ended after a two-year run but returned 13 years later in 1986 with Bell signing on as the title sponsor.

In 2017 it became part of the Rolex Series, with each elite tournament in the series having a minimum prize fund of $7 million.

In 2021, as part of a partnership with the European Tour, the U.S. PGA Tour announced that it would co-sanction the event and place it on its 2022 schedule as an official PGA Tour stop, acting as the natural lead-in to the Open Championship. Part of the agreement saw the PGA Tour use its monopoly muscle and bring Genesis on as the tournament’s new title sponsor, which also titles the annual Tiger Woods hosted event at Riveria.

The field in East Lothian is headlined by PGA Tour stars Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa, among a bevy of top-ranked players.

All eyes will be on McIlroy, who won the Scottish Open in 2023. The five-time major winner will seek to reboot his game before heading home to Nothern Ireland for next week’s British Open at Portrush.

U.K. bookmakers have world No. 1 red-hot Scheffler as the pre-tournament favorite at 4-1, with McIlroy at 9-1. England’s Tommy Fleetwood is a distant third at 20-1 while defending champion Robert MacIntyre is offered at 22-1.

Fleetwood, still in search of his first PGA tour win, enters off a T2 at the Travelers — his second top-4 finish in his last four starts. Meanwhile, native son MacIntyre returns home in good form, headlined by a solo second at the U.S. Open.

Morikawa, Schauffele and Aberg are tied for the fourth best odds at 25-1. All three stars enter in middling form.

Meanwhile, Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Sam Burns and Viktor Hovland are all at 35-1 and round out the top-10 favorites. JT enters Scotland off a T9 in New England but before that had two missed cuts in a three-start span, both cuts being majors. Hovland (per usual) continues to be a question mark (hot and cold).

Burns comes in off a T17 at the Travelers but remains a question mark psychologically, given his epic collapse at Oakmont. Then there’s Fitzpatrick, who returns to Scotland amid another terrible season. The Englishman did finish T8 in Detroit — only his second top 10 all season.

Adam Scott and Ryan Fox are each offered at 50-1, slightly ahead of Sepp Straka, Harry Hall, and Corey Conners, who are all at 55-1.

Finally, reigning U.S. Open winner J.J. Spaun is offered as a longshot at 75-1.

Top-10 Betting Favorites

1. Scottie Scheffler 4-1
2. Rory McIlroy 9-1
3. Tommy Fleetwood 20-1
4. Robert MacIntyre 22-1
5. Xander Schauffele 25-1
5. Collin Morikawa 25-1
5. Ludvig Aberg 25-1
8. Justin Thomas 35-1
8. Matt Fitzpatrick 35-1
8. Sam Burns 35-1
8. Viktor Hovland 35-1
