The 2026 Cognizant Classic at PGA National’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the early PGA Tour season. Colombia’s Nico Echavarria emerged as the champion, securing his third career PGA Tour victory in stunning fashion, thanks to a flawless weekend capped by a clutch final-round performance.

Echavarria, the 31-year-old from Medellín, entered Sunday three shots back but steadily chipped away at the lead. He posted a bogey-free final round of 5-under 66, finishing the tournament at 17-under par 267. Over the weekend, his consistency shone through, carding just four bogeys and proving unflappable under pressure.

The spotlight, however, fell heavily on Ireland’s Shane Lowry. The 2019 Open Champion looked poised for victory, holding a commanding three-shot lead as he stood on the 16th tee. Lowry had been cruising, with minimal mistakes and strong play through the demanding layout. But PGA National’s infamous “Bear Trap” — the treacherous closing stretch of holes 15-17 — lived up to its reputation.

Disaster first struck on the par-4 16th: a poor iron shot led to a double bogey. The bleeding didn’t stop there: on the par-3 17th, Lowry found the water twice off the tee, resulting in another double bogey — the first time in his PGA Tour career he’d posted consecutive doubles. Those two holes erased his lead in heartbreaking fashion.

Meanwhile, Echavarria, playing in the group ahead, seized the moment. He drained a crucial 10-foot birdie putt on the difficult par-3 17th, then parred the 18th to hold on. Lowry limped home but couldn’t recover, finishing with a 1-under 69 for the round and a share of second on 15 under.

Echavarria finish two strokes clear of Lowry, Taylor Moore (68), and Austin Smotherman (69). The victory earned the Colombian $1.728 million from the $9.6 million purse, 500 FedExCup points (propelling him into the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings), and a return trip to the Masters.

In his post-round comments, Echavarria reflected on the rollercoaster: “Sometimes you have to have good breaks,” he said, crediting his steady play and ability to stay patient. He also shared a lighthearted personal note — his third PGA Tour win meant fulfilling a promise to his wife, Claudia: the family was finally getting a dog.

Lowry, gracious in defeat despite the pain, admitted the collapse stung. “I had the tournament in my hands and threw it away,” he said, marking his second tough late stumble of the year.

What started as a potential wire-to-wire charge for Lowry turned into a classic comeback story for Echavarria, reminding everyone why the “Bear Trap” remains one of golf’s most feared finishing stretches.
