The upstart LIV Golf League makes history this week as it tees off on African soil for the first time in its five-season history with the debut of the LIV Golf South Africa, March 19-22, 2026, at The Club at Steyn City in Midrand — just outside Johannesburg.

This landmark event marks a major expansion for the Saudi-backed circuit, which has rapidly grown its global footprint since launching in 2022. After lighting up venues across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Europe, and the North America, LIV now arrives in Africa for a multi-year commitment, bringing its signature high-stakes, team-and-individual format to a passionate golfing nation.

The host venue, The Club at Steyn City, is a modern masterpiece designed by Jack Nicklaus. Set within a sprawling 2,000-acre luxury lifestyle estate — more than two-and-a-half times the size of New York’s Central Park — the course blends pristine parkland layout with dramatic natural features, including wildlife sightings like impalas and porcupines roaming the grounds.

Opened in 2015, Steyn City has already hosted Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour events, but this debut elevates it to the global stage with LIV’s high end talent, and massive $30 million purse.

Expect an electric atmosphere as fans flock to support their home heroes: Southern Guards GC, featuring South African major champions Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, alongside compatriots Dean Burmester and Branden Grace.

Oosthuizen and others have long advocated for bringing top-tier international competition home, and this week delivers exactly that.

The field features LIV Golf’s marquee lineup, including box office superstar Bryson DeChambeau (fresh off a playoff victory in Singapore) and two-time major winner Jon Rahm, a winner two weeks ago in Hong Kong. Other LIV stars teeing it up in South Africa include Joaquin Niemann, Cam Smith, Dustin Johnson, Tyrrell Hatton, Sergio Garcia, and Anthony Kim, among others.

With no cut and all 57 players competing across four rounds, the pressure builds from Thursday’s opening shotgun start at 12:15 PM local time through Sunday’s finale.

As the countdown hits its final hours (with gates opening early each day around 9:30 AM), anticipation is sky-high. This isn’t just another stop — it’s a historic first swing in “Big Game country,” spotlighting South Africa as a premier golf and tourism destination while showcasing LIV’s bold vision for the sport.
