Players have been accumulating FedExCup points since Hawaii in early January, and the 70 who racked up the most will face off this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship – the first event of the FedExCup playoffs. Additionally, these 70 players also locked up their PGA Tour cards for 2026.
As the first of three playoff tournaments, players begin this event with the points they earned over the past seven months, but for 20 in the field, the ride will end in Memphis, as only the top 50 will move onto Maryland for the BMW Championship, the second leg of the playoffs. Those outside the top 50 after Memphis will be eliminated from the playoffs.
A large portion of the field will have enough FedExCup points to move onto round two, regardless of what happens at this week’s event, but even those who have locked up later round berths will not be short on motivation: Cup points are tripled for the first two playoff rounds, meaning the player who takes top billing at TPC Southwind will earn a cool 2,000 points.

To put that in perspective, only eight players have tallied more than 2,000 points during the entire season, so there is a great deal of potential for playoff movement.
In addition to earning a spot in the field at the BMW Championship, the top 50 after the FedEx St. Jude will qualify for next year’s Signature Events, so the motivation is doubled.
A win here makes a player a lock to reach the Tour Championship at East Lake, even if that winner is No. 70 Matti Schmid.
New this year: the Tour Championship will no longer be contested using the oft-criticized Starting Strokes, otherwise known as handicaps. Simply put: the Tour Championship returns as a regular stroke-play event with the winner (from a field of 30) being awarded the FedExCup trophy… and a $10 million payday.

Finally: The Tour Championship will be considered an official PGA Tour victory while the OWGR will award world ranking points to the winner. The money, however, will not part of the historical record of a player’s statistics. The champion’s prize money is considered a “bonus.”
