AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rory McIlroy etched his name deeper into Masters lore on Sunday, holding off a charging Scottie Scheffler to claim his second straight Green Jacket at Augusta National.

The Northern Irishman carded a final-round 71 to finish at 12-under par (276), one stroke ahead of Scheffler, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods as the only players to win back-to-back Masters titles.

McIlroy entered the final round sharing the lead after a roller-coaster week. He built a record six-shot advantage through 36 holes with rounds of 67 and 65, but a third-round 73 on the firm, fast conditions at Augusta National saw him slip into a tie with Cameron Young at 11 under. On Sunday, he overcame a slow start and navigated late drama to close out the 90th Masters with a clutch performance.

The defending champion started steadily but faced pressure as Scheffler mounted a charge. McIlroy’s round featured timely birdies and crucial pars, though he made a bogey on the 72nd hole. He held his nerve on the final green, tapping in for par to secure the one-shot victory at 12 under.

Scheffler finished at 11 under after a strong effort that fell just short.

In the traditional Green Jacket ceremony, McIlroy was presented with his second jacket by Augusta National officials. Reflecting on the moment, he acknowledged the significance of defending his title after completing the career Grand Slam with his dramatic 2025 playoff victory over Justin Rose.

“Last year completed the career Grand Slam,” McIlroy said in post-round comments, noting the freedom that comes with having already achieved golf’s ultimate individual feat.

McIlroy’s path to consecutive wins was anything but straightforward. His mid-tournament dominance gave way to a tighter battle on moving day, where Amen Corner and the challenging setup tested the defending champion.

Yet the 36-year-old delivered when it mattered most, showcasing the mental resilience that has defined his recent resurgence at Augusta.

This victory marks McIlroy’s sixth major championship overall, tying him with legends like Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson. It also underscores a new chapter in his career: after years of near-misses at the Masters, winning in 2025 appeared to unlock a calmer, more confident version of the four-time major winner.

The win caps a historic week at Augusta National, where McIlroy’s ability to grind through adversity on Sunday mirrored the grit required to defend the game’s most prestigious title.

With the Green Jacket now his for another year, McIlroy joins an elite group of repeat champions. As he looks ahead, the question turns to whether this back-to-back success signals the start of a new dominant era, or simply the latest highlight in an already Hall of Fame career.

For now, though, Rory McIlroy can savor slipping into that Green Jacket once more.
