Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 ranked golfer, is navigating the 2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs with a new fill-in caddie for the second consecutive event, as his regular caddie, Ted Scott, remains absent due to a personal family matter.

For the BMW Championship, the second leg of the PGA Tour’s postseason at Caves Valley Golf Club, Scheffler has enlisted Michael Cromie, a veteran caddie who typically works with Chris Kirk, to carry his bag for the week, as confirmed by Scheffler’s agent, Blake Smith, and reported by the PGA Tour.

This follows Scheffler’s use of another temporary caddie, Brad Payne, during the final round of the previous week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, where Scott had to return home to Louisiana unexpectedly. Payne, a close friend of Scheffler and president of the College Golf Fellowship, stepped in and helped guide Scheffler to a 3-under 67, securing a T3 finish, just one stroke shy of a playoff. Payne had previously caddied for Scheffler during the third round of the 2024 PGA Championship when Scott attended his daughter’s high school graduation.

Cromie brings significant experience, having worked with Kirk since 2020 and boasting a strong golfing background himself, including an All-American collegiate career at the University of Georgia and a 2014 North & South Amateur title. Scheffler was spotted practicing with Cromie at Caves Valley, indicating Cromie is expected to caddie for the entire tournament.

Scheffler, who has already clinched the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings, is aiming to become the first golfer to win back-to-back FedEx Cups. With four victories this season, including two major championships, he remains a formidable contender despite the caddie changes. Scott has been on the bag for all 17 of Scheffler’s PGA Tour wins since their partnership began in late 2021, making his absence notable.

The BMW Championship, with only the top 50 players from the FedEx Cup standings competing, sets the stage for Scheffler to continue his dominant season.
