The final major of the 2025 golf season gets underway this week with the historic Royal Portrush Golf Club hosting the 153rd Open Championship. The world’s best golfers will all be on hand at the historic seaside links course, situated along Northern Ireland’s top coast. But only one can take home the coveted Claret Jug.
Two of the three major champions this year (Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy) are multi-major winners; will it become three of four? Or will it be another first timer like J.J. Spaun?
Below, we rank our top 20 for The Open Championship:
20. Justin Thomas

The Kentucky native enters the world No. 4 and with a win on the 2025 season. Unfortunately, this is a major and Thomas has become a disaster on the biggest stages. He has missed the cut in seven of his last 11 major starts and in eight career starts at The Open, he has never finished in the top 10 and only once has he posted a top 30. Just crazy bad!
Odds: 60-1
Book Rank: 16th
Last 6: 22, 9, MC, 31, MC, 2
Last 6 Majors: MC, MC, 36, 31, MC, 8
Best at The Open: T11 (2019)
19. Robert MacIntyre

The 28-year-old Scot enters in decent form with four top-20s in his last six starts, including a runner-up at the U.S. Open… MacIntyre also posted top-10 finishes at the Players and Phoenix Open… In five career starts at the Open, MacIntyre has posted two top-10s… He enters as the 14th ranked golfer in the current OWGR.

Last 6 Majors: 2, 47, MC, 50, MC, 8
Best at The Open: T6 (2019)
18. Patrick Cantlay

The world No. 20 has struggled for much of 2025, and his record in the majors is less than good… He has posted a pair of top-5s in two of the Signature events, though… In seven starts at the Open, Cantlay owns just one top-10. He’s considered one of the best players without a major.
Odds: 70-1
Book Rank: 20th
Last 6: 32, 12, MC, 12, MC, 4
Last 6 Majors: MC, MC, 36, 25, 3, 53

17. Matt Fitzpatrick

The 2022 U.S. Open champion seems to be coming out of a two-year slump. Enters off back-to-back top-10s including a T4 at the Scottish Open… Fitzy posted a top-10 at the PGA Championship in May… Finished in the top-20 at Portrush in 2019, his best finish in the British Open.
Odds: 40-1
Book Rank: 12th

Last 6 Majors: 38, 8, 40, 50, 64, MC
Best at The Open: T20 (2019)
16. Jordan Spieth

The 2017 Open champion is tough to gauge. He’s been hurt since last season, but has shown flashes of vintage Spieth… Enters off a T23 at the U.S. Open and T7 at the Memorial… Owns two other top-5s (Byron Nelson, Phoenix) in 2025.
Odds: 60-1

15. Patrick Reed

Reed enters off a win in Dallas and T10 in Spain… Owns two top-25s in the majors this season, including a solo third at the Masters… Needs a win at Portrush to make the U.S. Ryder Cup team… Best Open finish is a 10th in 2019 (at Portrush)… Would be shocked if Reed went belly up in Northern Ireland.
Odds: 80-1
Book Rank: 23rd
Last 6: 10, 1, MC, 23, MC, 23

13. Shane Lowry

The 2019 Open champ has been up and down in 2025: up (two runner-ups in Signature events), down (major results: MC, MC, T42). Yet the Irishman remains a one of the tour’s best iron players and is an artist around the green… He’s won the Irish Open and British Open, so his resume screams world class on links courses, particularly in Ireland.
Odds: 35-1
Book Rank: T10
Last 6: 45, MC, 13, 23, MC, 2
Last 6 Majors: MC, MC, 42, 6, 19, 6

10. Brooks Koepka

The Florida State product hasn’t been his consistent self in the majors since winning the 2023 PGA. Still, one of the best of his generation on the major stage so hard to ignore… Finished in the top 10 in four of his last eight starts at the Open.
Odds: 80-1

Last 6 Majors: 12, MC, MC, 43, 26, 26
Best at The Open: T4 (2019)
9. Joaquin Niemann

26-year-old Chilean enters in solid form with eight finishes of T9 or better in 10 starts on the LIV tour season. However, in the two majors he’s played this year, Niemann was just okay, posting T39 at the PGA and T22 at the Masters… The uber-talented star is still in search of his first top-10 finish in a major.
Odds: 60-1
Book Rank: T18
Last 6: 23, 23, 1, MC, 29, 20

But he’s still very good… Schauffele enters off a T8 at the Scottish Open… In the three majors this year, he’s been consistently solid, highlighted by a T8 at the Masters… The crazy impressive stat: In 33 career major starts, Xander owns 25 top-25 finishes.
