The Solheim Cup, the LPGA’s biennial Ryder Cup-style matches – pitting America against Europe, will be contested this year at the acclaimed Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Team USA’s selection process was somewhat altered due to the COVID-19 interruption, so instead of eight players qualifying by points, only seven will make the team via points. This will give U.S. Captain Patty Hurst an extra pick (three instead of two).
“The Solheim Cup Committee felt that providing the USA captain with an additional pick was appropriate given the change in playing opportunities in 2020 and 2021,” said Heather Daly-Donofrio, the LPGA’s Chief Tour Operations Officer. “The Committee continually monitors all points standings and rankings to ensure the fairest possible method of selecting Team USA.”
Two players will still be able to qualify through the Rolex Rankings (the top two who have not already qualified through points).
To recap: Team USA will be comprised of 12 players – Seven (7) off the points list; two (2) through Rolex Rankings (not already qualified through points); and three (3) captain’s picks.
Europe’s 12-women team will be comprised of two (2) players off the Ladies European Tour points list, four (4) from the Rolex Rankings, and six (6) captain’s picks.
Nelly Korda and Danielle Kang Clinch Spots on Team USA!
Following the Women’s Scottish Open, there were no changes in terms of the overall horse race as Nelly Korda and Danielle Kang are the only guaranteed locks for the team. The two America stars have been 1-2 for most of the season, and with time running down, it’s not a huge surprise.
As of now, the seven Americans qualifying off points are (in order) Nelly Korda, Danielle Kang, Ally Ewing, Austin Ernst, Lexi Thompson, Jessica Korda and Megan Khang.
There was also no change with the two Rolex Rankings qualifiers with Lizette Salas and Jennifer Kupcho 1-2 in the race.
Both teams will be finalized following this week’s AIG Women’s Open (Aug. 19-22, 2021).
