The second leg of the five-event West Coast Swing tees off this week in San Diego with the Farmers Insurance Open.

Contested at Torrey Pines, the field for the long-running SoCal event is fairly stout and features a handful of marquee names, including red-hot Jon Rahm, arguably the world’s best player, alongside top-ranked stalwarts in Justin Thomas, Will Zalatoris, Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama, among others.

While there are many players to like, particularly Rahm, these are the ten we feel are the cream of the crop – at least for this week in San Diego.

The 2021 Masters champ enters southern California in search of his first top-10 finish of the season… Has not missed a cut in 2023 but a T21 in the 39-player Sentry field is his best result… The 30-year-old Japan native disappointed (T48) in his title defense at the Sony… Matsuyama’s best finish at Torrey Pines was T3 in 2019… Posted a T26 at the 2021 U.S. Open.

Still looking for his maiden PGA Tour win, the 27-year-old Stanford product appears to be on the verge of a walk to the winner’s circle… Owns two top-10s in his three most recent starts, highlighted by a T7 at the Sony, where he shot four rounds of 67 or better… Statistically, McNealy ranks 2nd on the tour in scoring (69.116) and 3rd in strokes gained: putting (1.48)… Best finish in San Diego: 15th in 2020.

The southern California native entered the 2021 calendar year as a 30-year-old journeyman with a single PGA Tour win and a world ranking of 103… Two years later, Homa enters the 2023 year as a five-time tour winner and a top-tier star with a world ranking of No. 16… The 32-year-old UC-Berkeley product comes in off a T3 at Kapalua… He sits 6th on the tour in birdie average (5.31) and 7th in total strokes gained (1.835).

The world No. 9 cooled off dramatically after claiming his second career major at the PGA… His first two starts of 2023 have been no better, if not worse: T40 (CJ Cup) and T25 (Sentry) while ranking an unfathomable 180th in scoring (72.18)… A third straight poor finish could send JT out of the world top 10 for the first time since 2017 (he owns the longest current streak)… Despite all that, Thomas is one of the three or four most talented players in the world and is due to bust this funk… Ranks 8th on tour in birdies (5.00).

The two-time major winner endured something of a slump in 2022 but seems to have righted the ship and enters off a solo sixth in the Bahamas and runner-up at Kapalua. (Although, it remains to be seen what the blown lead at Kapalua will have on his psyche going forward)… Currently ranked No. 8 in the world, the California native sits 3rd on tour in greens hit (78.82%)… Finished T21 in his only start at the Farmers but posted a T4 in the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

Followed up a surprise 2021 rookie year with an even better sophomore campaign, which featured three top-10s in the majors, highlighted by a pair of runner-up finishes… Won his first tour title late last season in Memphis before a WD at the BMW ended his season… Entering 2023 off the injured reserve list, the Texan chased a T11 at Kapalua with a T36 last week at PGA West… Lost to Luke List in a playoff here last season.

The 33-year-old Finau enters in top form with a win and T7 among his four finishes on the 2023 campaign… Going back to last season, the Utah native owns seven top-10 finishes in his last ten starts, highlighted by three victories… Currently ranked 3rd on the tour in birdies and 4th in scoring (69.280)… Best finish at Torrey Pines was a T4 in 2017.

The red-hot Spaniard enters off four wins in his last six official starts (two on the U.S. PGA tour and two on the European circuit)… And if the recent form weren’t proof enough, the 28-year-old owns two wins at Torrey Pines: first at the 2017 Farmers, and again in 2021 at the U.S. Open… Currently ranked No. 3 in the world, which is laughable, Rahm holds down the tour’s top spot in greens hit (81%), birdies (6.67) and scoring (68.89).
