Jordan Spieth is one of the most popular players in the world because he’s really good, and really accomplished. But he’s also a fan favorite for his soundbites, both on the course with caddie Michael Greller, and afterwards with the media.

Following his opening round at the AT&T Byron Nelson, Spieth was asked about his round with fellow Texans Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler, who he’s known since he was a junior golfer.

And Spieth didn’t mince words. He essentially admitted that most of the cliches and laudatory stuff he says “are 75% BS,” but when he complimented his fellow Texans he meant it.

“They’re both obviously incredibly talented,” said Spieth. “I told Michael [Greller] on the second hole, ‘Mikey, this is weird. I remember being on the green in the group with these guys when I was 13 and they were 11.’

“So what a kind of cool experience to see that now and obviously the success they’ve had.

“I’ve had obviously tons of respect for both of them since then, and if I’ve ever been asked about either one them I’ve said, ‘there is no doubt they’ll be out here for a long time.’

“There are a lot of things that I say that are 75% BS, but that happened to be one that hit.”

Spieth shot a 63 and co-leads after 18 holes on 9 under par. Scheffler was 5 under, while Zalatoris was 2 under.
