Matt Fitzpatrick shot a final-round 68 at The Country Club to finish on 6-under par at the 2022 U.S. Open.
The Englishman then nervously watched on the 18th green as Will Zalatoris attempted a birdie putt to force a playoff. When the American’s birdie attempt slid by the left edge, resulting in a tap-in par, Fitzpatrick and his caddie Billy Foster broke into a celebration that was a long time coming.
No longer the best player to have never won on the PGA Tour, Matthew Christopher Fitzpatrick is now a major champion.
The Englishman finished his final day at the famed Brookline golf course with three bogeys offset by five birdies, highlighted by two gains on Nos. 14 and 16 to reach 6-under par.
With his maiden major title, Fitzpatrick earned $3,150,000 and 600 FedExCup points to move to No. 6 on the money list and ninth in points. He also picked up 100 world ranking points and is expected to break the the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career.
