Bubba Watson echoed Bryson DeChambeau‘s recent comments that the majors need to provide an exemption path for LIV golfers.

After the Official World Golf Ranking denied LIV Golf’s request for rankings points, one of the important issues heading into the upstart tour’s third season will be the eligibility of its non-exempt players for the majors.

Watson, the captain of the RangeGoats GC, offered his idea to include LIV golfers.

“We shouldn’t go after world ranking points. We should go after top 10, top 15 on the money list — our points list on LIV should get into majors,” said Watson.

“Makes it easy. These guys are so good. The top 10 this year could play against anybody. You could make a U.S. team, you could make a European team, they could play with anybody, our top 10.

“That’s how you should get into majors, and I’ve been saying that forever. Forget points. Just go straight off the money list, try to get 10 people or 15 get in; trying to get more people, so 15.”

Watson, a two-time Masters champion, who has a lifetime exemption into the Masters, said he was speaking on behalf of younger LIV players such as Talor Gooch and Torque GC captain Joaquin Niemann. Both are currently ineligible to compete in any of next year’s majors despite easily being two of the world’s best 40 players. (Gooch was ranked 31st before joining LIV; Niemann was ranked 15th.)

Niemann understood that not being able to play in majors was a possibility before joining LIV. Currently ranked 68th in the OWGR, the Chilean plans to compete in events on the Asia tour but he doesn’t believe it will be enough to crack back into the top 50.

“I want to win majors, and I want to have my chance to be playing on those,” he said. “The majors is all about having the best players in the world competing against each other.”

“Hopefully there is some way that we can get into those events.”

Watson believes there will eventually be a resolution for top (non-exempt) LIV players such as Niemann to have a pathway into majors.
