Cam Davis carded a final-round 2-under 70 to earn his second career Rocket Mortgage Classic title (2021, 2024).
Davis’ final round at Detroit Golf Club was highlighted by a terrific up-and-down at the par-4 18th hole which left him tied for the lead with Akshay Bhatia on 18-under 270. The Aussie then waited as Bhatia, who played in the final group, lined up a 32-foot birdie putt to claim victory. But Bhatia left his attempt about 4 feet short, and then shockingly missed his par putt.
“I wouldn’t wish what happened to Akshay on anyone,” Davis said. “But I’ve done a lot of grinding to kind of get myself out of a hole and just all of a sudden to do that, it’s pretty good.”
Davis, who entered Detroit in poor form, having failed to post a single top-10 finish all year, credited hypnosis for his newfound performance.
“I started working with a hypnotherapist a few weeks ago just to take another angle into trying to get myself sorted out,” he said. “I saw a little bit of a spark last week, but nothing to show this coming.
“This is crazy.”
For the second consecutive week, 54-hole co-leader Bhatia (72) played in the final group in the final round. He finished T5 (Travelers) and T2 (RMC).
Bhatia becomes the 11th player on record (since the start of the 1983 season) with four top-two finishes on the PGA Tour prior to turning 23 years old.
“Just a little bit of nerves, honestly,” said Bhatia, when asked what happened on 18. “I’m human.”
Davis Thompson (68) and Min Woo Lee (69) also finished a shot back.
