The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass is known for its drama, and the island-green 17th hole usually steals the show. But on Thursday in the first round of the 2026 edition, it was the finishing 18th hole that delivered a brutal twist for Shane Lowry.
The Irishman, fresh off a strong (yet heartbreaking) runner-up finish at the Cognizant Classic just a couple of weeks earlier, was cruising along decently through 17 holes. Coming off a rare birdie on the signature par-3 17th, Lowry stood at even-par — putting him inside the top-35 as his afternoon was coming to a close. Then came the par-4 18th, the iconic risk-reward closing hole at Sawgrass.
A quadruple bogey on the last makes it a frustrating finish for Shane Lowry at TPC Sawgrass.

The 2019 Open champion ended up in the water twice, leading to a disastrous quadruple bogey 8 on the card. That one hole flipped his scorecard from a respectable even-par to +4 in an instant, resulting in an opening-round 76 (+4). It was four dropped shots on a single hole — enough to drop him more than 60 positions down the leaderboard (from around T35 to T99).
Lowry will need a strong recovery in Round 2 to climb back into contention at the PGA Tour’s flagship event.
