In Sunday Singles at the Ryder Cup, Team Europe will enter the finale at Whistling Straits down a full touchdown, 11-5.
No team has ever come back from such a large deficit, but leave it to a pair of Irishmen to provide the most inspiring quotes.
First, it was Shane Lowry who found a quote online that perfectly fit the underdog status of the Euros.
“I read a quote last night, I was looking at stuff on my phone, and for some reason it popped up,” said Lowry after his winning match on Saturday afternoon.
“And it was like, ‘If you’ve got a 1 percent chance, you have to have 100 percent faith.‘ And I just think that we really need to live by that tonight and tomorrow and go out and give it our best.”
Then this morning, in a pre-game interview with NBC’s Jimmy Roberts, team Captain Padraig Harrington said, “It’s [a comeback] never been done before. But it doesn’t mean it can’t be done. One guy can’t win nine points, but 12 can each win one.
At the Solheim Cup, Irish star Leona Maguire described the Irish doggedness this way: “It is an Irish thing to be an underdog, to always have to fight for what we deserve, what we believe in.”
