Paul Casey reeled off a hat trick of birdies to close his opening round on 6-under 65. The Englishman joined Jason Kokrak atop the leaderboard after day one of the LIV Golf Mayakoba.
Kokrak played bogey-free, chipping in for one birdie and holing a couple of lengthy putts.
Mayakoba previously hosted a PGA Tour event in the fall from 2007 until November, when the resort moved over to LIV Golf.
The lead pair were two shots clear of Peter Uihlein, Talor Gooch and Carlos Ortiz, who were joint third on 4 under.
Dustin Johnson was part of the group at 3-under 68.
Casey’s Crushers GC finished 10 under, three ahead of Johnson’s 4 Aces squad and Smash GC captained by Brooks Koepka (71).
Phil Mickelson had three straight birdies early in his round but had to settle for a 1-over 72.
The tournament’s round two on Saturday will be on linear television for the first time as part of its broadcast partnership with The CW Network.
