With the PGA of America managing this week’s major championship at TPC Harding Park, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is more or less taking in the big-league tournament as a fan.

“We have a lot of good players out here,” said Monahan, with tongue firmly in cheek, highlighting a long-running frustration of Tour execs, regarding the management of majors.

His week got off to a rough start, though, when a wayward tee shot by Matthew Fitzpatrick hit Monahan squarely in the shoulder.

“One hop, off the shoulder,” Monahan joked, of the Englishman’s bad tee ball.

FIW: Fitzpatrick, a popular sleeper pick this week, shot a 4-over 74 to finish T129 after day one.
