10. Webb Simpson

With one of the more well-rounded games on Tour, Webb Simpson led the Tour in both scoring average and birdie average in a stellar 2020 season, where he two wins, a runner-up, and two third-place finishes.

The former U.S. Open champion’s record at Augusta has not been anything special, but he was finally relevant in the most recent edition, with a third-round 64 and a Sunday 70 to finish T5, two strokes back of Tiger Woods.

Simpson, now ranked No. 7 in the world, posted a T8 at September’s U.S. Open.

For the sixth consecutive year, Rory McIlroy goes into Augusta with the chance to complete the elusive career grand slam. The four-time major winner finished in the top 10 at Augusta each year from 2014 to 2019 before a T21 last year.

The 2020 season has been a roller coaster ride for the Northern Irishman, as he finished in the top 5 of all six starts he made before the COVID layoff but since play resumed he’s been pretty terrible: with a pair of T8s – both more recent – being his only top 10s in 12 starts.

At the U.S. Open, he had rounds of 67 and 68, but alternated them with a Friday 76 and a Sunday 75. He has the ball-striking to win a green jacket. Whether he has the putting or the mindset are maybe a different story.

8. Tyrrell Hatton

Perhaps because he’s charming and relatable, we have consistently been bullish on the 29-year-old Englishman. During the 2020 season, Tyrrell Hatton won a high-end event on both the PGA Tour (Arnold Palmer Invitational) and the European Tour (BMW PGA Championship).

Hatton finished the season with six top-10s in just 11 starts, and he ranked second on Tour in birdie average. In the past 19 months, he has missed just two cuts on Tour.

However, those two events were this year’s PGA Championship and U.S. Open, and he has not played Augusta well in any of his three starts here. We still have him ranked high, because we love his game, but another poor major start and he probably loses our trust in majors.

World Rank: 9th
Odds to Win: 25-1
Odds Top 5: 5-1
Odds Top 10: 2-1

7. Patrick Cantlay

Had not been special since the Tour re-start, particularly in the two majors, both of which he finished T43, but the former amateur superstar is flying high again after chasing down Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas to win the ZOZO Championship in his last start.

Patrick Cantlay is an absolute shot-maker, exactly the kind that seems to succeed at Augusta, as evidenced by the fact that he was tied for the lead with three holes remaining last year before finishing T9.

That top-10 is especially impressive considering he shot matching 1-over 73s in the first two rounds. A Saturday 64 catapulted him into contention, which he then followed with a Sunday 68.

World Rank: 10th
Odds to Win: 28-1
Odds Top 5: 5-1
Odds Top 10: 3-1

6. Justin Thomas

Somehow, surprisingly, world No. 3 Justin Thomas has been largely forgotten about coming into 2020’s last major championship. That is in spite of three wins last season and 14 top-10s in his last 23 Tour starts.

The 27-year-old who won the 2017 PGA Championship is not quite in the Dustin Johnson territory in regards to needing a second major for his legacy, but with 13 career victories, which puts him in elite company at his age, critics will start to take notice if he goes too much longer without one.

The Masters is the only major he has yet to record a top 10 in, with his best result being a T12 last year.

World Rank: 3rd
Odds to Win: 13-1
Odds Top 5: 3-1
Odds Top 10: 2-1
Last Six: 2, 12, 8, 3, 25, 49
