Robert MacIntyre rolled in a 22-foot birdie putt on the final hole to reach 3-under 67 and claim the Scottish Open title. The Scot became the first native in 25 years to win his national open. (Colin Montgomerie in 1999 was the last Scot to win the Scottish Open.)
“I’ve not been shy in saying it: The Scottish Open is the one I want,” MacIntyre said on Saturday.
MacIntyre entered Sunday’s finale two shots back of Ludvig Aberg and was three back of Adam Scott through 13 holes on Sunday. But a long putt on No. 14 followed by an eagle on the 16th tied things up. Then a lengthy (22 feet) birdie on the last hole set off a celebration.
“I think I lost my voice with the scream on that hole,” said MacIntyre. “It’s incredible. Next week is a new week, but I tell you, I’m going to celebrate this with my family, friends and everyone here. I’m going to celebrate this one hard. We’ll pitch up to The Open when we pitch up to The Open.”
Scott (67) finished solo second on 17 under, one clear of Frenchman Romain Langasque (64).
