PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Scottie Scheffler shot a 65 in the third round of the PLAYERS Championship and will take a two-shot lead over Australia’s Min Woo Lee into Sunday’s finale at TPC Sawgrass.
The Texas native offset a single dropped shot with an eagle and six birdies, including two gains on his final three holes to secure the pole position on 14-under 202.
“Yeah, I played really good today,” said Scheffler, who will move back to world No.1 with a win on Sunday. “I got off to a nice start, which is always good. Kept it rolling from there, gave myself a lot of looks. Good finish as well.
“So overall very solid day, only one bogey, which is really good around this golf course.
“Thoughts about tomorrow, I think the conditions are going to be pretty tough. From what I saw, it’s going to be pretty gusty winds tomorrow in the afternoon, so it should be a good challenge.”
Lee, who will be paired with Scheffler in Sunday’s final game, was the tournament leader through 17 holes on Saturday. An untimely bogey on 18, though, coupled with two late birdies by Scheffler, resulted in a three-shot swing in the American’s favor. Still, the 24-year-old Aussie finished on 6-under 66, highlighted by an eagle and five birdies, en route to a 12-under-par total.
Cam Davis, also from Down Under, was alone in third on 10 under, following a Saturday 67. He was one clear of a foursome at 9 under, headlined by Englishman Tommy Fleetwood (65).
