U.S. team captain Stacy Lewis‘ gamble to start a slumping Lexi Thompson in the morning foursomes (alternate shot) paid off nicely as the Americans swept the opening session of the 2023 Solheim Cup.

The pair of Thompson and Megan Khang gave the U.S. team early momentum as the American duo reeled off wins on the first three holes to sit 3 up. The Swedish pair of Linn Grant and Maja Stark fought their way back, though, eventually deadlocking the match with a birdie on the par-3 14th.

The Americans bounced back quickly to go 1 up with a birdie on No. 15. They then closed out the match with a par on the 17th to pick up the Americans’ second point of the morning. Ally Ewing and Cheyenne Knight routed England’s Charley Hull and Denmark’s Emily Pedersen 5-and-4 to secure the Americans’ maiden point of the morning. The U.S. pair took six of the first nine holes and cruised home.

The pair of Danielle Kang and Andrea Lee captured the third point by edging France’s Celine Boutier and England’s Georgia Hall 1 up. Finally, Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz completed the sweep in the anchor match, closing out Ireland’s Leona Maguire and Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist on the 18th for a 1-up win.

It marks the first time the U.S. has started 4-0 in the Solheim Cup.

Europe is trying to win the event a third straight time, which it has never done since the event’s inception in 1990.

The teams will play four four-ball (best ball) matches later today.
