Breaking. The Presidents Cup was hoisted by the Americans for the 12th consecutive time, spanning 24 years.
Team USA throttled the Internationals at Royal Montreal Golf Club, 18.5 to 11.5 – recording the widest margin of victory by an American team on foreign soil.
The only time the International team claimed victory was at Royal Melbourne in 1998, four years before Tom Kim was born. The U.S. has retained the Cup since 2000.
On Sunday, captain Jim Furyk penciled in Xander Schauffele to bat leadoff and the two-time major winner in 2024 set the tone with a 4 & 3 thumping of Australian Jason Day.
“These guys get along so well, but as you know, they can flat play,” said Furyk. “When it got tough, anytime the Internationals put some pressure on us, they played their butts off for us.
“I’m just so proud to be a part of it.”
Russell Henley was an impressive 3-1-0 in his first career team match play. The Georgia native went an impressive 2-1-0, paired with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in foursomes and four-ball play. For Sunday Singles, Henley took on Sungjae Im, and won rather easily, 3 & 2 – closing out the South Korean on the 16th hole.
Then came Patrick Cantlay, who posted a flawless bogey-free 3 & 1 victory over Canadian Taylor Pendrith.
Sam Burns, the only player who went unbeaten this week, halved his match with Korean star Tom Kim, highlighted by a clutch birdie on 17.
The clinching point came from Keegan Bradley, although it was somewhat anti climatic after the 2025 Ryder Cup skipper failed to drain match-clinching putts on 16, 17 and then 18. Instead, Bradley settled for backdoor point when Si Woo Kim missed his own putt on the 18th.
“We talked about taking care of business today, and we all went out there and did it. I was just lucky enough to be in that spot in the day, but really a meaningful moment in my life,” Bradley said.
“The last time I played in one of these I was the clinching point for the Europeans in the Ryder Cup. Fast-forward 10 years later, and I got to do that today.
“Really something I’ll remember the rest of my life.”
Max Homa finally scored his first point of the tournament with a 2 & 1 win over Canadian Mackenzie Hughes.
Overall, the Americans won four of the five sessions (5-0 Thursday Four-ball, 0-5 Friday Foursomes, 3-1 Saturday AM Four-ball, 3-1 Saturday PM Foursomes, 7.5-4.5 Sunday Singles) with the Internationals winning only the foursomes matches on Friday, 5-0.
“A lot of these matches were so close,” sid International captain Mike Weir. “It’s disappointing not to get a win. We put our team together to win this thing, and when you don’t get a win, it’s disappointing, but a lot of great things to take away.”
The win for Furyk was something of a do-over, allowing the future Hall-of-Famer to offset his loss in France as the captain for the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup squad.
“Really the matches come down to just some special moments,” Furyk said. “For one reason or another, these guys usually play loose in the Presidents Cup, they let it fly, and we’ve been able to win some crucial points, make some crucial putts.”
Corey Conners (5 & 3 over Tony Finau), Christiaan Bezuidenhout (2 & 1 over Brian Harman) and Hideki Matsuyama (1 Up over Scottie Scheffler) were the Singles winners for the Internationals.
The next Presidents Cup will be contested in 2026 at Medinah, just outside Chicago. By then, there’s hope that the LIV-PGA Tour framework will have been settled and the International team will be restocked with marquee names such as Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Abraham Ancer, Dean Burmester and Louis Oosthuizen, among others.
