The 2026 Players Championship got underway Thursday at the iconic TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and the opening round delivered a classic logjam at the top of the leaderboard as play was suspended due to darkness for a few groups.

Five players share the lead at 5-under after day one, with plenty of contenders lurking just behind.

Maverick McNealy, Lee Hodges, Sepp Straka, and Sahith Theegala all posted matching scores of 67 to sit T1. Austin Smotherman was also -5 through 17 holes.

Straka completed his round bogey-free, including a dramatic chip-in eagle on the par-5 16th to surge into the tie.

Several players sit one shot back at 4-under 68, including Justin Thomas (showing signs of a bounce-back after a tough 2026 debut at Bay Hill), Cameron Young, and Russell Henley.

A strong contingent of star power lurked one further back on 3 under, including Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, and Xander Schauffele.

Three of the tournament’s box office draws had mixed days on the demanding layout. Defending champion Rory McIlroy carded a 2-over 74, leaving him well down the pylon, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and five-time major winner Brooks Koepka finished even-par 72 to sit T40.

Collin Morikawa, another pre-tournament betting favorite, tweaked his back and withdrew after one hole, amplifying the sense that this year’s Players could belong to anyone.

Weather played a role throughout Thursday, with a mix of wind, rain, and sunshine testing patience and shot-making on the Stadium Course. Play was suspended for darkness with some groups incomplete, meaning the full Round 1 picture will finalize Friday morning before Round 2 begins.
