The PGA Tour heads from North Carolina to New Jersey for The Northern Trust – the first leg of the 2019 FedExCup Playoffs. Teeing it up this week will be the top-125 players in the final regular season points standings, as of Sunday evening following the Wyndham Championship.
Only 70 players will move on to the next stage (BMW Championship in Medinah, Illinois), so the stakes will be extra high this week for many players at Liberty National, especially those ranked anywhere from 60 to 125. Those who do miss the top 70 cut will have to wait until next season, which – believe it or not – starts next month (Sep. 12-15 at The Greenbrier).
As one of only three playoff events, the field this week is naturally loaded with all the big names, including the biggest of all – Tiger Woods. For the opening two rounds the 43-year old legend will be paired with last week’s winner J.T. Poston and veteran Scott Piercy.
Shane Lowry will be making his first start since winning The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The Irishman will be joined by Adam Scott and Kevin Kisner.
Two more morning marquee groups include Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Webb Simpson in one threesome, with Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, and Matt Kuchar following right behind.
In the afternoon, defending champion Bryson DeChambeau will be paired with fellow 20-something stars Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood in one headlining threesome.
They will be followed by two more marquee groups in Justin Rose, Marc Leishman, and Rickie Fowler; and Xander Schauffele, Gary Woodland, and Patrick Cantlay.
