The British Open announced on Wednesday that it will reduce the age limit exemption to 55 for winners of the Claret Jug in 2024 and beyond.

The news was part of several adjustments made to its exemption categories.

Until 2010, British Open champions were exempt to play in The Open until age 65. It was reduced to age 60, starting with Louis Oosthuizen in 2010. It will now be 55 for anyone winning this summer at Royal Troon and in future years.

The new ruling will only impact winners going forward. It will have no effect on some of golf’s Gen X legends, such as Tiger Woods (48), who will have an exemption for 12 more years. Same with Phil Mickelson (54) and Henrik Stenson (47), who will be able to play at The Open until the age of 60.

The 152nd Open Championship is July 18-21 at Royal Troon in Scotland.
