Thorbjorn Olesen fired a course-record 62 on Thursday at Golf Costa Adeje and will take a one-shot lead into day two of the Tenerife Open.

The Dane, who started his opening round on No. 10, offset a lone bogey with 10 birdies, highlighted by five consecutive gains (Nos. 15-1) to reach 9-under par 62.

Coupled with his record 61 in his season debut last week at Gran Canaria Lopesan Open, the 31-year old now owns two course records in less than six days.

“To be honest my expectations for this week are low as well,” said Olesen. “I was very happy to finish top five (last week), that was amazing.

“I haven’t been that high on a leaderboard for a very long time; being in contention again was a great feeling and something I’ve missed very much for the last few years.

“I don’t set high expectations now, I found something last week and was making birdies. Today my putting was great and no wind to start made it a bit easier.

“I’m trying to take every day as it is and concentrate on the shot and see what’s happening.”

He continued: “I think the first nine holes was the best putting display I’ve shown for a very long time – I just had to look at it and it went in.”

American John Catlin and South African Garrick Higgo, the Tour’s two most recent winners, were one shot off the pace on 8 under, alongside Swede Alexander Bjork and Dean Burmester, also of South Africa.

Spaniard Eduard Rousaud, Finn Kalle Samooja, Frenchman Robin Sciot-Siegrist and German Nicolai von Dellingshausen were T6 on 7 under.

Joost Luiten headlined six more players tied for 10th on 6 under. The Dutchman produced the highlight of the day when he made an ace for the second consecutive week, holing a 7-iron from 164.
