Leading into the Scottish Open, U.K. newspapers had a field day with Justin Thomas and his anti-LIV Golf statements.
Headlines such as, “Justin Thomas relishing chance to beat LIV Golf rivals at Scottish Open” and “Justin Thomas: Beating LIV Golf rebel would make Scottish Open win even sweeter“ made JT a viral voice ahead of the big tournament at the Renaissance Club.
But then the world No. 5 went out and made a fool of himself with rounds of 73 and 77 to finish 10-over par, a career worst 36-hole score.
After his round, one LIV golfer texted me with 10 laughing emojis (+10) and Mike Tyson’s famous quote: “Everybody’s got a plan ’til they get punched in the face.”
Ironically, it was a bad draw (hello shotgun start!) that did Thomas in.
Meanwhile, of the four LIV golfers who played in the event – that seemed to so outrage Thomas, three made the cut, while a fourth, Ian Poulter, finished tied for 138th, alongside Thomas.
In the end, the big-talking Thomas not only didn’t win the Scottish Open, but he also didn’t beat a single one of the four “LIV rebels,” even Poulter who opened with an 8-over 78.
Now, I don’t care if you’re Tiger Woods, if you’re going to open your mouth and talk tough like he did this week, you best be able to back it up.
And JT didn’t come close. To circle back to Tyson, the reigning PGA champion got punched in the face with some well-deserved karma.
Moral of the story: shut up and play golf.
