Tony Finau shot a 65 on Monday at Liberty National, and then beat Cameron Smith on the first sudden-death playoff hole to claim victory at The 2021 Northern Trust.
Smith, who came up short on a 23-foot birdie putt to win in regulation, ended any potential overtime drama by hitting his tee shot out of bounds on the first extra hole (No. 18). With the pressure reduced, and victory all but assured, Finau hit a perfect approach, and then two putted for par to clinch his second career title, and first in over five years.
On the day, Finau carded just one bogey against five birdies, and a highlight-reel eagle, to reach 20 under par for the tournament.
With the win, the 31-year-old Utah native earned $1,710,000 and 2,000 FedExCup points. He will enter this week’s BMW Championship holding the No. 1 spot in the points standings.
