This week’s Wyndham Championship on the PGA Tour is a tale of two tournaments — there’s the race to capture the Sam Snead Cup – one of the PGA Tour’s best looking trophies, and then there’s a scramble deeper in the field for those trying to crack the top-70 mark in the season-long FedExCup standings.

Those who finish inside the top 70 will advance to next week’s FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis, the first leg of a three-stop postseason, culminating with the top 30 players in the standings invited to East Lake for the Tour Championship – where players battle for the FedEx Cup (but oddly not the tournament title).

Additionally, the top 125 will retain their tour cards for the 2024-25 season which will be finalized after the FedExCup Fall which concludes at The RSM Classic in November.

It should go without saying, but for many, careers will be made this week at Sedgefield.

Wyndham Championship History

Sam Snead

The Wyndham Championship is most closely associated with the man who, along with Tiger Woods, has the most victories in PGA Tour history (82): Sam Snead.

Snead first won the tournament in 1938, which was the inaugural event, and went on to win eight times total, five more victories than second-place Davis Love III.

Snead’s last Wyndham triumph, in 1965, was notable as the then 52-year-old became the oldest player to win a PGA event, a record that still stands today.

In his later years, Snead took on the role of hosting the tournament. The winner’s trophy is called the Sam Snead Cup.

The beginnings of the Wyndham Championship can be traced all the way back to 1938, when it was known as the Greater Greensboro Open. The tournament has been played at three different courses, all in the Greensboro, N.C. area.

The current host venue, Sedfield Country Club, was the home course off and on in the early years before moving there permanently from 1961-1976 and then again from 2008-present.

The 2021 edition featured a six-way playoff, won by Kevin Kisner. This tied the PGA Tour record (the 1994 Byron Nelson) for largest number of participants in a sudden-death playoff.

In addition to Snead, notable winners include Ralph Guldahl, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Lloyd Mangrum, Billy Casper, Julius Boros, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Raymond Floyd, Lanny Wadkins, Sandy Lyle, Mark O’Meara, Davis Love III, Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson.

The bookmakers have Sungjae Im favored to win this week. The Korean enters in strong form with four straight finishes of T12 or better, highlighted by a T3 at the Travelers and T4 in Scotland. Im is offered at 12-1, just ahead of Cam Young.

Shane Lowry, and Si Woo Kim, a winner here in 2016, are listed at 22-1.

Billy Horschel, who almost won here in 2020 but was edged by a late-charging Jim Herman on Sunday, is also listed at 22-1.

England’s Aaron Rai is next at 25-1 followed by 2023 British Open champ Brian Harman (28-1).

Akshay Bhatia is listed at 30-1. The PGA Tour rookie enters off a T64 at the 3M Open and missed-cut at The Open.

Also, among the favorites this week: Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Davis Thompson and Jordan Spieth, who are each in varying degrees of form, and listed at 35-1.

Spieth, who enters Greensboro at No. 63 in the FedExCup standings, returns to the Wyndham for the first time since 2020. Spieth lost in a playoff to Patrick Reed in his 2013 debut.

Listed at 40-1 are Cam Davis, Eric Cole and Min Woo Lee, who round out the top-10 favorites in Greensboro.

World No. 35 Justin Rose, who sits at No. 52 in the FedExCup standings, is listed at a generous 70-1. The Brit enters off a solid performance at The Open where he finished T2.

Defending champion Lucas Glover is offered at 100-1. After a breakthrough year in 2023, the South Carolina native has struggled big time in 2024 – and is still searching for his first top-10 finish of the season. He will defend ranked No. 76 in the FedExCup standings and will need a good week to move on to Memphis.

Several bigger names who badly need points (to maintain position or qualify) are: Spieth (63), Jhonattan Vegas (67), Davis Riley (72), Glover (76), Rickie Fowler (104) and Joel Dahmen (117).

Top-5 Betting Favorites

1. Sungjae Im (12-1)
2. Cam Young (20-1)
3. Billy Horschel (22-1)
3. Shane Lowry (22-1)
3. Si Woo Kim (22-1)
