Dustin Johnson shot a 5-under par 67 on Sunday to win the BMW Championship by 3 strokes over Paul Casey. With his third win of the season, DJ moves back into first place in the FedEx Cup standings, heading into East Lake.
Each week we write the 3 Stats To Win, where we look at the key stats to win a particular event, based on the field, event, and course. This week we’re following up and showing you the 3 Stats That WON the BMW Championship for DJ.
Driving Distance
As we wrote this week: Crooked Stick will play over 7500 yards for the BMW Championship. With the weather forecast in mind, it will be extremely crucial for the players to hit it long off the tee. The long hitters are at an advantage here.
DJ finished number one in Driving Distance, averaging 319.3 over the four days.
Par Breakers
As we wrote this week: Another key to doing well this week will be hitting a bunch of greens, and rolling in those birdie and eagle putts. This is not a course where conservative play helps. The winning score is likely to be close to what it was last time (-20), and with that in mind, the winner will need to be making plenty of birdies, and not settling for pars.
DJ finished number one in birdies (23) and T1 in eagles (3). He did not “settle” for pars, finishing at T64.
PUTTS PER GIR
As we wrote this week: It’s all about getting close to the hole and giving yourself plenty of birdie putt opportunities.
DJ finished number one in Putts Per GIR with 1.159.
