With a win yesterday in Greensboro, coupled with a victory at last year’s Barbasol, Jim Herman is one of only seven (7) PGA Tour players with multiple wins over the past 13 months.
In fact, only world Nos. 2 and 5, Justin Thomas (4 wins) and Collin Morikawa (3 wins), respectively, have won more over this time period than the 42-year old ‘Tin Cup’ Herman.
Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy, Brendon Todd, and Webb Simpon have also won twice since July 2019.
Thomas, Morikawa, McIlroy, Reed, and Simpson are all ranked in the world top 10. Todd is ranked No. 42. Herman, up until last evening, was ranked No. 318.
So why is Herman ranked so low (now No. 91) despite two PGA Tour titles? Because they also account for his only two top 10s and top 20s over this time period. In fact those two wins bookend a 21-tournament span where Herman missed 11 cuts, and finished outside the top 30 in seven (7) other starts. Excluding his two victories, his only top-30 finish was a T27 at the 34-man field Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
Meanwhile top-20 ranked stars such as Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, and Justin Rose, have been shut out of the winner’s circle over this time period – as have marquee names such as Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and Jason Day, among many others.
Once asked about consistency, McIlroy said, “I’d rather have three wins and three missed cuts than six top 10s.”
Herman is essentially the poor man’s version of McIlroy’s philosophy: Two wins and 11 missed cuts is still two victories better than say world-class Schauffele, who in the same time period owns 13 top-20 finishes in 20 starts, including eight top 10s and four of top-3s.
