The 2026 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass delivered a thrilling second round on Friday, with Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg surging to the top of the leaderboard at -12 after a spectacular 9-under-par 63.

Aberg, the rising star and recent PGA Tour winner, exploded out of the gates with a blistering front-nine 29 that included two eagles and matched the tournament’s nine-hole record. He added more birdies on the back nine, capping his round with a birdie on the iconic 18th hole for a total of seven birdies (and two eagles) across the day. His performance was highlighted by elite ball-striking, pushing him two shots clear of the field at the halfway point.

Trailing Aberg by two was Xander Schauffele at -10. The two-time major champion set the early pace in the morning wave with a strong 7-under 65, hitting all 14 fairways and gaining significant strokes off the tee. Schauffele’s consistent play kept him firmly in contention, setting up what promises to be an exciting final-group pairing with Aberg on Saturday.

Cameron Young sits alone in third at -9 following a solid 67, while Corey Conners and Justin Thomas (the 2021 Players champion) share fourth at -8. The leaderboard remains stacked, with several big names within striking distance heading into the weekend at the PGA Tour’s flagship event.

Aberg’s hot streak comes after a strong showing in recent starts, and his ability to “keep it very simple” has paid dividends on the demanding Stadium Course. With the $25 million purse on the line and the iconic par-3 17th island green awaiting, the pressure will only intensify over the final two rounds.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler were further back — Scheffler narrowly made the cut — but the focus remains on Aberg and Schauffele as they chase the coveted Players title. Stay tuned for Moving Day fireworks at TPC Sawgrass!
