Following a one-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler at the Tour Championship – a win that will always have an asterisk next to it, Rory McIlroy confidently strolled the to the staging area in the media room at East Lake, raised his clenched fist in the air, and smugly declared with a smirk, “Super Bowl champ!”
The troll was in reference to LIV Golf, whose lawyer argued in court that the FedEx Cup was the “Super Bowl of golf” in its failed attempt to get three of its players into the PGA Tour’s postseason.
Washing the Northern Irishman’s golf balls, the Associated Press wrote, “McIlroy rarely resists trolling LIV Golf or Greg Norman.”
The 33-year-old laughably compared his FedEx Cup win to Scheffler’s victory at the Masters.
“I told him [Scheffler] we’re 1-all in Georgia,” McIlroy said. “He got the Masters. I got this.”
McIlroy was runner-up to Scheffler at Augusta National in April, although he was never in contention, shooting a Sunday 64 to score a backdoor second-place finish.
