In terms of Internet memes, Brooks Koepka is sort of seen as the Bill Belichick of the PGA Tour – the same stone-cold, detached face, win or lose.

That’s not to say there weren’t bursts of emotions behind the scenes, particularly during tough times.

Koepka, who recently claimed his eighth career PGA Tour title at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, admitted afterwards that he was in a “dark place” amid a series of injuries that led to a prolonged slump.

On Wednesday, the former world No. 1 even confessed to breaking some golf clubs following a pair of poor performances.

“I snapped two sets of irons after playing [the Mayakoba Golf Classic in December] and then after Torrey [Farmers Insurance Open in January], and I don’t really do that,” said Koepka at Riviera Country Club, ahead of the Genesis Invitational.

When asked where he broke his golf clubs, Koepka answered, “It was in the living room [of a rented house]. I walked right into the house and just [snap] right over the knee.”

Koepka continued, “It’s not a common ritual and I’m not one to break clubs or do anything.

“Just frustration. I’ll be honest, I didn’t even come out of my room on Saturday at the house we rented. I don’t think I came out of the room for about 30 hours or so, I was so mad at myself, didn’t want to talk to anybody.”

A reporter then asked Koepka, “Did you literally just take every one of them and crack them over your knee? Is that what you’re talking about?”

Koepka, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was over my knee.”

Don’t expect a viral video to pop up on social media any time soon, however.

Photos, though, could potentially leak out as a smirking Koepka noted, “I have pictures. I sent it to all my boys.”

Koepka will play the first two rounds of the Genesis Invitational in a featured grouping, alongside Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele.
