Jordan Spieth followed up an opening-round 66 with a 70 on Friday and will enter the weekend at the Memorial with sole possession of second-place.

The 25-year old Texan, who entered Muirfield Village off two-straight top-10s – his firsts of the year, finished his second day at Jack’s Place with a bogey against three birdies to reach 8-under par, one off the pace of co-leaders Martin Kaymer, Kyoung-Hoon Lee and Troy Merritt.

The key to Spieth’s resurgence this week has been his accuracy off the tee. After hitting 13 of 14 fairways on Thursday, Spieth was 12 of 14 on Friday and ranks among the leaders in the field.

It’s a drastic improvement from his 51.07% season average which places him near the bottom of the Tour in Driving Accuracy (202 of 211 players).

Quotable

“The conditions were easier than yesterday. We certainly had it nice today. It was a beautiful afternoon to play golf. I felt like I had more looks than I did yesterday.

“It’s just a funny game. I felt like I hit pretty similar putts, I was just off on the speed early. But it was solid playing. Two bogeys in the first 36 holes, if I could duplicate that, I’d like to think I’d make as many or more birdies over the next two days. For me it’s about eliminating mistakes, and I’ve done a good job of that.”
