“I Hit It Solid, Bub”: Daly Stunned After Losing Insperity on Final Hole

Through 17 holes in the final round of the Insperity Invitational John Daly and Mike Weir were deadlocked for the lead at 10 under par.

But Daly, who seemed rushed, hit his approach ball on the 18th into the water, resulting in a double bogey and a two-stroke loss to Weir.

As he was watching the ball flight, you could see the concern grow on his face, and then as it plopped into the water, a stunned Daly said, “I hit it solid, bub.”

He continued, shaking his head in disbelief, “I hit that so good, Peter… I hit that so good bub. It catch a gust?”

Afterwards, Daly took his lumps like a man.

“It was a great day. I didn’t miss too many shots. Made a lot of putts, a lot of par-saving putts,” said Daly who was looking for his first win since the 2017 Insperity.

“I played great both days. The putting is great. At least I can leave here knowing that my stroke feels good. We’re going to greens next week that are kind of this good, so I’m excited about it.

“I just caught a gust on 18. I hit a 9-iron from about 155 and I hit a 9-iron from 141 there and I caught a gust and just got a bad break, but I can’t hit the ball any better.

“I’m excited about next week.”
