The Thai player finished with a three-day total of 12 under, two shots clear of Dane Thorbjørn Olesen (69), American Sean Crocker (67) and Australian Lucas Herbert (69).

“I did well for the last two days, I only missed a couple of shots to put myself in the top position,” said Meesawat.

“Very happy to finish first but still a lot of golf for tomorrow and I think it’s going to be good fun.

“It [a win] means a lot. I’m going to earn my European Tour card and it’s going to be the first win for me on the European Tour. I’m just going to go out and have fun, concentrate with my game.”

Englishman Sam Horsfield (68), Japan’s Yisaku Miyazato (68), and Australians Brad Kennedy (67)and Dimitrios Papadatos (66) tied for fifth at 8 under, and secured the other four first-round byes.

Overnight leaders Lee Westwood and defending champion Brett Rumford entered Saturday hoping to secure one of the top 8 spots, but both missed the cut (top 24) entirely. The Englishman Westwood posted a 78, while Rumford shot 74.
