Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, officially withdrew from U.S. Open qualifying on Monday, ending his streak of 41 straight starts in a major championship, which began at the 2014 Masters.
The USGA said when a player withdraws from a qualifier, he cannot enter another one at a later date.
The U.S. Open exempted the world’s top 60 ranked players who appeared in this week’s list. LIV Golf does not get world ranking points from the PGA Tour-controlled OWGR.
Pro Golf Weekly reached out to a source with LIV Golf for comment.
“If we used the season’s first two majors as a measuring stick to determine the world’s best, Reed would have easily qualified as one of the top 60 in the world,” said the LIV Golf source. “He (Reed) made the cut at both majors, finishing T12 at the Masters and T53 at the PGA Championship. Do the math.
“Meanwhile PGA Tour players that are qualified missed the cut in both majors but played well in weak events on the PGA Tour. It’s all a joke.”
