Nearing the conclusion of the Memorial Tournament, CBS cameras focused on the Billy Horschel’s family standing alongside the 18th green at Muirfield. After he tapped in for par to clinch a four-shot victory, Horschel’s family ran onto the green to celebrate.
During the winner’s press conference, Horschel was asked about the celebration and what it meant to him:
“It’s sort of a running joke in our family that my wife and my kids have never been at victory. My wife has never wanted to fly in on a Saturday night when I’ve had a chance to win,” said Horschel, who now owns seven PGA Tour titles.
“So she feels like she may be bringing bad luck or something, so she’s never wanted to do that.
“I had a chance to win Bay Hill this year. My family was there. They were right there on the 18 green. As I was walking up, had a chance to make a putt to go into a playoff with Scottie Scheffler.
“But I’ve just always wanted that one moment where my family runs out, the kids run out, that I can always look back for many years to come and they can look back at for their entire life of being on the green and congratulating their father for a victory.
“So it’s special to have that video and those photos for the rest of our lives.”
Horschel’s family includes wife, Brittany; daughters, Skylar and Colbie; and son, Axel.
On his website, Horschel writes: “I can honestly say that my three children are the biggest wins in my life.
“I know I wouldn’t be the golfer or more importantly the man I am without Brittany by my side. She’s an amazing mother, an incredible support to me and my best friend.
“I often say ‘Love my Life’ and I mean it. I’m so lucky to have a career I love and a wife and three happy kids that complete me.”
A bigger win for the Horschel family occurred two weeks ago when Brittany celebrated six years of sobriety with a round of golf alongside her husband. (Brittany was a college golfer at U Florida until an injury sidelined her career.)
