“Spinnier” and “Screaming”: Spieth on the New Titleist Pro V1x

The 2021 season has seen Jordan Spieth‘s game finally return to elite form. In his last seven starts, the three-time major winner has racked up five top 10s, including four top 5s, highlighted by a win at the Texas Open. It was the 27-year old’s first victory in nearly four-years. The Texan chased his 12th career PGA Tour win with a top-3 finish at the Masters.

So, with his career back on track, and heading into the season’s second major (with a chance to complete the career Grand Slam), he’d never tinker with his gear, right?

Wrong. (Although to be fair, it’s the same golf ball he’s been playing for years, just the 2021 model).

Calling it “spinnier around the greens” and “screaming through the air,” Spieth explains his reason for the switch in this quick-hit clip:

“Yeah, so I’m trying to optimize launch conditions through the bag,” said Spieth on why he switched to the new Pro V1x.

“For me, the 2021 Pro V1x allowed… I get more spin around the greens – it’s softer, spinnier around the greens with kind of my short game shots.

“And then when I went up the bag, I started to get a little bit higher launch but it didn’t add spin in the long clubs, it just added ball speed and launch.

“So still – at that like it’s just a little bit kind of – a little higher window but it just looks like it’s screaming through the air. And then from the 7 iron on down I didn’t see much difference in the full shots which is like I said more action around the greens.”
