Tom Hoge shot a first-round 63 and leads the Pebble Beach Pro-Am by one shot.
Hoge, who finished runner-up at the American Express two weeks ago, signed for a bogey-free scorecard, featuring nine birdies, including six in a row to close.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Hoge. “I feel like I’ve been playing well. I’ve been excited to get out here on the golf course and feel like Pebble Beach is a golf course that suits me well, so I was excited to get out here this week.”
Red-hot Irishman Seamus Power opened with a 64 and was alone in second, one clear of Jonas Blixt (64) and Austin Smotherman (65).
Three off the pace was tournament favorite Patrick Cantlay, who carded a 65 to sit T5, alongside Andrew Putnam.
“Yeah, I started off strong and had a weird middle of the round, definitely gave a few away,” said Cantlay. “And then closed really strong.
“So finishing with three in a row on this golf course is a really nice finish, and I’m happy with my start for the week.”
Bill Haas and Ryan Moore were among a group of five players tied for seventh at 5 under, and rounding out the top-10 leaders.
